Many cosmetic products may contain botanical ingredients (e.g. plant extracts, juices, oils) and essential oils. Compared to an individual cosmetic ingredient, safety assessment of botanical materials and extracts is more difficult as these are composed of a mixture of many substances; furthermore, analytical identification and characterisation of each of the chemical component of a botanical material may be difficult, or not even possible in some cases.
Do you know what key considerations have to be made to assess the safety of botanical ingredients and essential oils in cosmetic products?
To investigate this topic in more detail and explore the requirements for the Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) in this area, check the CTPA guidance titled ‘Special Considerations for Specific Product Types in the Cosmetic Product Safety Report’,
which can be downloaded from the 'safety' tab of the publications page on the CTPA website. This guidance aims to support cosmetic safety assessors and colleagues in regulatory affairs with additional safety considerations that must be taken into account and must be reported within the CPSR for some specific products, due to their formulation or site of application.
CTPA members can access this guidance for free; it is available to non-members for a payable fee of £90.
