CMA Investigations on Environmental Claims

On 2 November, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) issued an investigation for environmental claims across different sectors, including cosmetics and beauty products, to assess whether environmental and green claims are compliant with the consumer protection laws or are misleading consumers.

The investigation comes as a consequence of the CMA’s research and evidence from other enforcers, demonstrating an increase in consumer demand for green products and an increase in businesses possibly making misleading, vague or false claims about the sustainability or environmental impact of their products.

Companies are reminded that environmental claims are regulated by the regulatory framework for cosmetic claims, consumer protection law and, if featured in advertising, by the advertising code.  For more information, please consult the CTPA Guide to Environmental and Green Claims.
