UK Deforestation Regulations

In 2022, the previous Conservative Government consulted on proposals to introduce due diligence requirements for forest-risk commodities. Although UK Deforestation Regulations were expected to be introduced in 2024, they were not progressed before the General Election.  Nevertheless, the UK remained committed to the pledge made at COP26 to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030.

On 23 June 2026, the current Labour Government announced its intention to introduce legislation to tackle deforestation.  Further details are available in the press release and policy paper.  A consultation on the UK Deforestation Regulations is expected.

The Government intends to legislate in 2027 and has indicated that the UK requirements will broadly align with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This approach is intended to support trade with the EU and ensure consistency in the requirements applying to Northern Ireland.

Under the proposals, businesses in Great Britain with an annual turnover exceeding £1 million that use forest-risk commodities, will be required to undertake due diligence to ensure those commodities have been produced in compliance with applicable local laws.
