CMA Investigation on Misleading Online Reviews

On 22 May 2020, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation across major websites to assess the level of protection for shoppers from fake and misleading online reviews.  In particular, the CMA is checking:

  • suspicious reviews;
  • manipulation of the presentation of reviews by businesses and brand owners;
  • whether reviews are the result of paid collaboration.

Through this work, the CMA wants to ensure that websites have robust systems in place to find and remove fake reviews or reviews that mislead people about a product or business; should non-compliance be found, enforcement actions will be taken.  For more information please visit the CMA website.
