CMA Investigation into Green Claims

On 26 January 2023, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced a review of claims made on a wide range of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) including toiletries and personal care items.  The move is an expansion of ongoing work by the CMA into ‘greenwashing’, which seeks to investigate whether products that claim to be beneficial, or less damaging, to the environment are being marketed to shoppers accurately.  The CMA will analyse environmental claims both online and in store to consider whether companies are complying with UK consumer protection law.

The CMA produced the Green Claims Code as a guide to help businesses understand how to communicate environmental claims while avoiding the risk of misleading consumers.
