On 21 May 2025, the Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety in Consumer Products (SAG-CS) published its opinion on UV filter 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) in cosmetic products.
In the absence of data from industry and an incomplete data package, SAG-CS carried out the review based on the published opinions from other authoritative bodies such as the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS).
SAG-CS agreed that 4-MBC exhibits endocrine disrupting properties in in vivo studies. SAG-CS also noted concerns with regard to the safety of 4-MBC, including the lack of a robust genotoxicity and reproductive/developmental toxicity data package and concerns with regard to endocrine disruption properties. Therefore, SAG-CS was not able to derive a safe level for use of 4MBC in cosmetics. Given these considerations, SAG-CS could not conclude on the safety of 4-MBC as a UV filter in cosmetic products.
