Mexico Ratifies UK's Accession to CPTPP

As a bit of background, the UK started negotiating its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in June 2021 and substantially concluded negotiations in March 2023.  On 16 July 2023, the UK signed the accession protocol to CPTPP.  On 15 December 2024, the UK officially joined CPTPP as a Member.  In addition to preferiential tariffs, CPTPP includes a dedicated Cosmetics Annex 8-D that provides direct benefits for companies trading within the bloc.

Following the ratification by most CPTPP member countries (Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam), Mexico has now ratified the UK’s accession to CPTPP, meaning the UK will be able to access CPTPP provisions with Mexico from 22 June 2026.  This marks a significant step forward in strengthening trade between the UK and one of Latin America’s largest and most dynamic economies, with clear advantages:

  • Reduced tariffs on most goods, lowering export costs;
  • Stronger access to a fast-growing, high-demand market;
  • Modern rules for services, digital trade and e-commerce;
  • Greater certainty through robust IP protection and transparent rules.
