US Introduces New Tariffs on Imports

The Trump administration in the United States has introduced new tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners.  The measures, announced on the 23 July 2026, took effect on 24 July 2026 and further details can be found on the White House website.  The tariff measures apply tariff rates of between 10% and 12.5% on imports from the countries concerned.

These new measures have been introduced under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. They replace the temporary tariffs (10% on all imported goods) that were introduced earlier this year and which expired on the 24 July. The temporary tariffs were introduced after the US Supreme Court rule the previous tariff regime under the Emergency Economic Powers Act (“IEEPA” or ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs) as unlawful. See news item.

The new tariffs announced and introduced does not introduce a significant change to the tariff rate applied to UK cosmetic and personal care products under the UK-US Economic Prosperity Deal, which already applied a 10% tariff to most general imports.

Products originating from the European Union are also affected, with a 12.5% tariff rate applied.

This development may be of interest to companies exporting to the US, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing changes to US trade policy.
