Yesterday, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) held its first Scientific Conference under the theme ‘Aligning Science, Policy and Consumer Perception’ at Central Hall Westminster, London.
The Conference, a CTPA member-only event, explored how scientific evidence, regulatory decision‑making and public understanding intersect, especially in an era of information overload and widespread misinformation.
A sold-out event, the Conference brought together an exceptional array of speakers, including experts from the Government, international and European cosmetic and personal care associations, cosmetic companies, academics, journalists and communications consultants.
Through presentations, interactive workshops and panel discussions, the programme covered important scientific and regulatory topics for the cosmetics industry including:
- how consumers understand and respond to information about chemicals, including the difference between hazard and risk;
- the latest developments in science‑based policy and regulation shaping the cosmetics sector;
- building confidence in animal‑free safety assessment;
- cutting-edge science behind UV filters and what the evidence tells us about their impact on the marine environment;
- how effective science communication can build trust and confidence amongst consumers and the media.
Caroline Rainsford, CTPA’s Director of Science, said:
"CTPA was delighted to bring together such a breadth of expertise for our inaugural Scientific Conference. The event demonstrated the value of collaboration between scientists, regulators, policymakers and communications professionals in addressing important issues such as public understanding of science, trust in evidence, and the role of robust scientific data in informed decision-making.
At a time when misinformation can spread quickly, open discussion and clear communication are more important than ever. CTPA will continue to work on fostering collaboration across the scientific community to promote evidence-based approaches and support greater understanding of the science behind, and safety of, cosmetics and personal care products.”
