D-G Insights - October 2026

Fostering International Relations

As you may have seen in the CTPA LinkedIn post, last month Nico Shaw Núñez (Director of Regulation and Sustainability), Diana Tamayo (International Relations Officer), Adele Ren (consultant to CTPA) and I were kindly invited to attend the CAFFCI (China Association of Fragrance Flavour and Cosmetic Industries) Annual Meeting & Expo (CAME) in Nanjing, China.

It was a pleasure to speak at the CAME, and a huge honour to meet CAFFCI Chairwoman, Madam Yan.

I have been pleased to see the relationship between CAFFCI and CTPA grow over the last few years.  The development of this partnership is of great importance to exporting companies in both regions.  Our Associations are already exchanging information and insights on policy, regulation and industry developments that are important to the success of our sector.  This helps companies be ready to undertake their export journeys through a better understanding of the market requirements and expectations.  CTPA is also exploring practical collaborations with CAFFCI, for example in the area of non-animal science and sustainability, which are, of course, important matters for our industry.

I am grateful to Madam Yan, the CAFFCI team and especially Jasmine Chen (International Affairs), for their warm welcome, hospitality and productive engagement.  I look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship and identifying new opportunities to work together in the years ahead.

Party conferences

As I noted in my last DG Insights, September and October are the months of Party-Political Conferences.

This year, for the first time, I attended the Business Days of all four main parties – Conservatives, Labour, LibDem and Reform UK.

It was interesting to hear from Cabinet members, Shadow counterparts and relevant party spokespersons at each event.  It is vitally important that CTPA is present at party conferences, broadening its political contacts and taking time to meet Ministers and politicians to raise the profile of our industry and share our main issues of concern.

I will be sharing more in-depth thoughts in a forthcoming Blog.

CTPA Scientific Conference

On 6 October, CTPA held its inaugural Scientific Conference at Central Hall Westminster, London.  It was a hugely successful, sell-out event.  A stellar line-up of speakers from industry, academia, Government, research and media provided rich, challenging, exciting, thought-provoking content.  I found it truly inspirational.

The title of the Conference was ‘Aligning Science, Policy and Consumer Perception’, and the rationale behind running a Scientific Conference was to bring together the breadth of different activities that are taking place across the scientific community, in the UK but also globally.  For this, our first, Scientific Conference, the Science department specifically wanted to focus on communication.  Many of us may be passionate about science but, and as we witnessed at the conference, being able to communicate science well is critical.

I’d like to thank the CTPA Team, especially Natascha Kilts (Technical Project Manager) for masterminding the event’s organisation and Alex Kadzeya (Office Services Facilitator) for his event support; and Caroline Rainsford (Director of Science) and Francesca Rapolla (Senior Affairs Manager, Science) for conceiving the idea and filling the conference with scientific exuberance and brilliance.  I am looking forward to the next one already!

Fond Farewell

I end with a fond farewell to our Senior Affairs Manager, Environment, Rachael McEvoy, who will be leaving CTPA at the end of October.  Rachael joined CTPA in 2021 as Environmental Information Officer and gained swift promotion to Affairs Manager and more recently to Senior Affairs Manager, Environment.

Rachael’s personal passion for the environment drove her purpose at CTPA, encouraging companies to put sustainability at the heart of their business and to rethink the whole life-cycle of cosmetic products, not least their packaging.

I am very pleased that Rachael is remaining within the field of sustainability and packaging, but she will be sorely missed at CTPA and by the Team.  I am sure you will join me in thanking Rachael for all she has achieved at CTPA and send her all good wishes and much success for the next stage in her career.

CTPA, your Association - working for you.
