CTPA launches Sustainability Handbook

This week, The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) launches its new Sustainability Handbook, developed with leading sustainability non-profit organisation Forum for the Future, to help cosmetics and personal care companies better understand sustainability challenges, identify practical responses and uncover new business opportunities.

Navigating a Volatile World – A Handbook for the UK Cosmetics Industry is a practical and forward-looking guide designed to help businesses respond to escalating environmental and social challenges.

The publication highlights how interconnected challenges are reshaping supply chains, product design and consumer expectations, requiring organisations to act with greater agility and foresight.

A practical set of tools

The handbook provides a practical set of tools designed to help businesses get under the skin of sustainability issues, move beyond risk mitigation and explore new opportunities for innovation and growth. It includes:

  • analysis of major global trends affecting the cosmetics sector, including climate breakdown, water scarcity and circularity;
  • guidance on how businesses can respond to emerging risks while identifying new opportunities;
  • insights into evolving consumer behaviours and future product needs;
  • practical tools and exercises to support strategy development and innovation.

By combining strategic insight with hands-on resources, the handbook aims to support organisations at every stage of their sustainability journey, from those just starting out to companies more advanced on the topic.

Showing CTPA’s commitment to broad and inclusive industry support as part of the Association’s Sustainability Strategy, the handbook is available to members and non-members for FREE at: www.ctpa.org.uk/ctpa-sustainability-handbook

Nico Shaw Núñez, Director of Regulation and Sustainability, CTPA, said: "The industry is already taking important steps to address sustainability challenges, but the pace of change means businesses must also look ahead. CTPA's Sustainability Handbook is about equipping companies with the tools they need to succeed in a changing world and prepare for a complex and fast-evolving operating environment."

Christine Lawson, Senior Affairs Manager, Sustainability, CTPA, said: “No matter your role in the development of cosmetics, I hope that this handbook will inspire and equip you to build practical strategies that are both innovative and actionable, for a resilient future.”

Zoe Le Grand, Managing Director, Forum for the Future, said: "The impacts of climate change, water scarcity and inequality are hitting all businesses hard.  We have been delighted to collaborate with CTPA on this handbook and hope that the creative exercises in the book help cosmetics and personal care companies make their businesses more resilient in this fast-changing world."

A webinar series

The Handbook was introduced during the opening session of CTPA’s webinar series, Helping you Navigate a Volatile World. Over the next 12 months, CTPA will host a programme of webinars to revisit and expand on key sections of the handbook, helping companies deepen their understanding and stay engaged with the issues shaping the sector.

CTPA’s Sustainability Strategy

CTPA first collaborated with Forum for the Future in 2018 to develop an ambitious Sustainability Strategy, 'Driving Towards a Net Positive Cosmetics Industry'.  The strategy is born from a passion to make the cosmetics and personal care industry a force for good by putting more back into society and the environment than is taken out.  Building on the great work members are doing individually on sustainability, the Association bring members together to share best practice and drive system-wide change to represent a balanced, conscientious, world-leading industry.

CTPA offers a breadth of resources to support cosmetics and personal care companies on sustainability, covering an ever-expanding range of topics with definitions, legal requirements and related guidance, such as the guidance around refill and reuse, or considerations for the use of upcycled ingredients.

The Sustainability Handbook is a new and practical addition to this offer, helping companies strengthen their response to emerging challenges and take confident steps towards a more sustainable future.
