On 1 September 2026, the UK secured full access to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), with Canada becoming the final member country to ratify the UK's accession. This also means that over 99% of UK current goods exports to CPTPP member countries will be eligible for zero tariffs, improving goods market access for British firms.
UK businesses can now access the full benefits of membership across all eleven CPTPP markets, covering economies worth almost £13 trillion in combined GDP with the UK included. The milestone gives UK businesses greater opportunities to export across several countries through improved market access and fewer barriers to doing business overseas. New opportunities with Canada include enhanced business mobility arrangements and greater access to public procurement opportunities.
As background, the UK signed the CPTPP in 2023, and it entered into force in 2024 with the first countries that had ratified. Members of CPTPP are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and the UK. More information can be found on the UK Government website.
