OIM Single-Use Plastics Report

The Office for the Internal Market (OIM) has published a report on the impact of restrictions on the sale of single use plastics, on the operation of the UK Internal Market.

CTPA contributed to the OIM study in relation to the upcoming ban on wipes containing plastic.

As part of the report, the OIM has issued recommendations to help UK policymakers manage regulatory differences or alignments on single-use plastics across nations. The guidance considers two key scenarios.

In cases where all UK governments share the same policy goals, such as the upcoming ban on wipes containing plastic, the OIM urges close collaboration via Common Frameworks. This would help streamline exemptions, reporting requirements, and guidance while reducing stakeholder confusion and ensuring aligned implementation dates.

Where regulatory approaches differ, the OIM recommends governments assess the impact on businesses operating across borders to minimise additional costs. It suggests designing regulations that allow businesses to adopt a single model that complies with varying national requirements.

The OIM also stresses the need for early, clear guidance for businesses and trade associations to aid in the transition, highlighting the importance of trade bodies in supporting SMEs.

The report is available on GOV.UK.
