Update on EC product safety alerts and reports of cosmetic products posing a risk to the health and safety of consumers.
The European Commission Safety Gate is used by EU market surveillance authorities to notify unsafe and noncompliant products, including those that present a risk to the health and safety of consumers. The online system serves as a single rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products. All non-food products intended for consumers or likely under reasonably foreseeable conditions to be used by consumers are included within the scope, with the exception of pharmaceutical and medical products. This information is circulated among the competent authorities, through a network of national contact points.
CTPA regularly checks the notifications made via the rapid alert system website. For information, below are recent notifications made by the Member States.
Czechia
Perfume with chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). The product has been withdrawn from the market.
Lithuania
Body gel and facial mask with chemical risk as they contain methylisothiazolinone (MI). The products have been withdrawn from the market.
Face cream with chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). The product has been withdrawn from the market.
Italy
Body gel, hairspray, and perfume with chemical risk as they contain butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). The products have been banned from the market.
Sweden
Skin lightening cream with chemical risk as it contains hydroquinone. Product import rejected at border.
Perfume with chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). Product import rejected at border.
Sun cream and body lotion with chemical risk as they contain a mixture of the preservatives methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylisothiazolinone (MI). Product sales have been stopped.
Body lotion with chemical risk as it contains isobutylparaben. Product sales have been stopped.
Skin lightening cream and face cream with chemical risk as they contain mercury. The products have been removed by the online marketplace.
Haircare product with chemical risk as it contains formaldehyde. Product import rejected at border.
France
Hair gel with chemical risk as it contains methylisothiazolinone (MI). Products have been recalled from end users.
Shampoo with chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). Products have been recalled from end users.
Facial serum and cream, and skin lightening serum, lotion and cream with chemical risk as they contain hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (HICC or Lyral). Products have been recalled from end users and withdrawn from the market.
Germany
Skin lightening cream with chemical risk as it contains mercury. Risk warning has been given to consumers.
Soap with microbiological risk as the total microbial count of the product is too high (measured value up to 340 000 cfu/g). Products have been recalled from end users and withdrawn from the market.
Slovakia
Shower gel with chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). The product also includes ingredients which are not listed on the label (benzoic acid and p-Chloro-m-Cresol). The product has been withdrawn from the market.
