The International Collaboration on Cosmetic Safety (ICCS) published their Best Practice Guidance to assess skin sensitisation, using non-animal New Approach Methods (NAMs) for substances in cosmetics and personal care products.
Designed specifically to help safety assessors and regulators move away from animal testing and toward NAMs for skin sensitisation, the guidance follows the principles of Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA), offering a step-by-step workflow that spans problem formulation, exposure assessment, weight of evidence evaluation, and transparent documentation.
The BPG on skin sensitisation integrates existing international frameworks into a practical, assessor-oriented format; supports decision-making in real world regulatory contexts; and provides guidance on transparency, uncertainty analysis, and exposure-based waiving.
