Defra Publishes Report on Microplastics Evidence Project

On 12 May 2025, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) published a report outlining the outcome of its evidence project on intentionally added microplastics.  This project researched the estimate emissions in the UK of intentionally added microplastics, and assessed the potential impact of different Risk Management Options (RMOs) to reduce them.

This project presents recommendations for future research based on uncertainties and remaining data gaps identified. Key recommendations relate to improving the understanding of existing (baseline) exposures from historic emissions of microplastics, developing new methodologies and research to gather data needed to more accurately assess microplastic hazards.

No decision has been taken yet on which RMO will be implemented.  Defra is considering the results of this study and consulting with other interested parties around Government regarding next steps.
