CTPA’s information campaign on cosmetics packaging recycling is live!
Ahead of “Recycle Week” (14-21 October 2024) and throughout October, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), the voice of the UK cosmetics and personal care industry, is sharing some important information about how to contribute to the recycling of cosmetics packaging. This information will be focused on engaging with brands and consumers to understand how we can work together to ensure that cosmetics packaging, including small packaging, does not end up in landfill.
Updated advice on recycling for consumers
Please visit CTPA’s consumer website thefactsabout.co.uk to discover the updated landing page on how to recycle cosmetics packaging, with key information on “take-back schemes” and how to find your nearest cosmetics packaging recycling point, as well as useful tips on recycling practices : How can I recycle my used cosmetics and toiletries packaging? (thefactsabout.co.uk)
What happens to our waste depends on the local facilities available for recovery or recycling of packaging waste. Also, some decorated items or containers with remnants of products can contaminate a recycling process and small items can fall through the mechanisms.
CTPA is providing support to the cosmetics industry in addressing this particular challenge, sharing information and materials which are meant to educate consumers on what they can do to be part of the solution. As one solution available today, many high-street chains now have collection boxes to collect small items of cosmetics packaging that are not accepted through household recycling. These are called “Take-back schemes”.
The CTPA consumer infographic “Recycling from the Bathroom” (download here, also available on thefactsabout.co.uk) provides easy-to-follow advice to encourage more recycling from our cosmetics and personal care products:
- which packaging can be recycled
- what to do with small packaging
- where to find a “take-back scheme” drop-off point
- how to dispose of wipes.
Supporting brands in their own efforts to communicate on recycling
CTPA material will be shared throughout all of October, allowing companies to engage and reuse the material on their own communications and social media channels.
Also, part of our ongoing work to guide companies of all sizes towards making their own products and businesses more sustainable, CTPA will be holding a webinar with the Advertising Standard Authority (ASA, the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media) during Recycle Week on the wider topic of green claims and how to communicate successfully about environment credentials. This webinar is open to all in the industry, both members and non-members of CTPA. Information and registration here.
CTPA supports the WRAP campaign
As an official supporter of WRAP and the UK Plastics Pact, CTPA will also echo this year’s “Recycle now” campaign, “Rescue me”, during Recycle Week and encourage its members to engage with it.
Dr Emma Meredith, Director-General of CTPA says: “As a trade association, we put a lot of effort into developing solutions to expand recycling opportunities and practices for cosmetics and personal care products. We are delighted to support this year’s WRAP “Recycle Now” campaign and to spread the word across the industry and to consumers about what positive action can be taken. Recycle Week is a great opportunity to talk more about the recycling solutions out there, including Take-back schemes”.
