The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the Competent Authority for cosmetic products in the UK, is looking for scientific experts to join its Register of Specialists. The Register allows OPSS to commission ad hoc pieces of work from a pool of pre-approved experts quickly and efficiently, to help ensure the safety of non-food consumer products. The Specialists will provide independent expert assessment of risks and support the development of evidence.
The scope of work encompasses a wide range of fields relevant to the safety assessment of cosmetics, toys and textiles including toxicologists, chemists, dermatologists, microbiologists and more. Some of the chemical areas of particular interest are provided below (please note this is not an exhaustive list):
- Use and application of non-animal test methods
- Dermal exposure assessment
- Nanomaterials
- Analytical chemistry
- Toxicology
- Risk assessment
- Allergens
OPSS continues to need a strong body of experts to provide advice, peer review and appraise research questions, proposals, and outputs, and other short pieces of research, across its remit. The Register will also be used to identify expertise to compliment the membership of relevant Scientific Advisory Groups and Committees across Government.
