This section will be looking at the conscious efforts of CTPA and the cosmetics industry to reduce avoidable waste including plastics and other non-recyclable substances from products and packaging, ensuring that the impact of materials entering the environment is minimised. This can be done by focusing efforts on product and packaging design and innovation to actively create products that remain sustainable throughout their life-cycle. By thinking about the circular economy of cosmetic products, CTPA can help motivate our industry to create an environment for packaging that is both renewable and sustainable.

What are Members Doing?
This is where the majority of CTPA members are doing their best and most innovative sustainability work. Of CTPA's 175 current members and associates, 192 initiatives are being undertaken by 71 different companies (as noted in 2019). The SDGs create the possibility to highlight within the Impact Goals where the cosmetics industry is spending its most energy as we see with SDG 12. 81 separate initiatives are being performed as of 2019 from 51 companies, or just under a third of all CTPA members, which comply with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption).
By designing products with sustainability in mind, companies with extensive research & development facilities are at the forefront of innovative design. However, we are also seeing disruptive influences bringing change to accepted practice and this is therefore an area where CTPA will seek to showcase new technologies and methods of working to help drive innovation.
What Can Consumers Do?
CTPA and the cosmetics industry is committed to reducing the environmental impact of cosmetic and personal care products wherever possible. However, how you use and dispose of your cosmetic and personal care products can sometimes have the most impact on the environment. As an example, the impact of your shampoo is at its greatest during actual product use and disposal. In this video you'll learn plenty of small steps that can be taken every day to use your shampoo sustainably.
