Supply chain issues abound. Costs have increased and companies have had to adapt to new ways of working to place products on the market. Meanwhile, divergence from EU regulation means the future of certain ingredients remains a concern for members. Yet against all odds our industry is growing. We’ve put the challenges of the pandemic behind us and emerged as strong and as vibrant as ever. In fact, CTPA has seen its membership increase by over 20% since 2021 – a testimony both to the industry’s health and the value the Association is adding. I cannot think of a time when CTPA has been more valuable to its members. Inside the regulatory vacuum, amidst the political turmoil, it has stepped forward with confidence to raise the true concerns of the industry to those who are shaping its future. It is in the right rooms championing the right kind of science-based decision-making that will both protect UK consumer safety and promote the growth our industry is capable of. The growth that UK plc so sorely needs. It’s been a privilege this year to watch CTPA emerge from the pandemic a changed organisation. Just like our industry, it is reinventing itself to meet today’s demands. Working closely with the Board, the team is responding quickly to commercial challenges while offering crystal clear technical direction that cuts through complexity. Its skill in translating highly technical information into widely applicable insight is surely a superpower? As I step away from my role at Kao, and step down as CTPA Chair, to carve out a new path for myself, I feel excited about the road ahead for CTPA. I know that the Team’s actions will alleviate the burdens felt by our industry. Collaborating with UK policymakers and Cosmetics Europe, CTPA will make sure companies can invest where it matters: in continued innovation, even in the most traditional categories, and in a Net Positive future for us all. As I pass the Chair baton to a new peer, I was asked what advice I would share with my successor. My answer: “Stay close to the team and empower the Association to act”. Equip the CTPA team members with the insight and support they need to represent the industry’s voice – and then give them the space they need to create change. Once our industry has recalibrated from the current challenging climate, I have no doubt that the future ahead of us all is a bright one – and with CTPA behind us, we’ll certainly get there faster. Debbie Rix Debbie Rix, CTPA Chair (2022) Leadership Report Debbie Rix was Chair of CTPA from June 2020 to March 2023 View from CTPA Annual Report 2022 _ 7Dr Emma Meredith, Director-General View from Leadership Report Our industry is at an inflexion point. Whether it’s the development of the UK Chemicals Strategy, the negotiation of Free Trade Agreements (FTA) or instigating the systems through which we’ll bring our products to market, the future of how we’ll do business in the UK is being written into existence before our eyes. While it is certainly an uncertain time, it is also an incredible time to be part of Team CTPA. Thanks to the Association’s rich heritage in offering credible, science-led consultancy on risk and regulation, team members have found their voices are being welcomed where it really matters. We have found these conversations to be extremely collaborative. It is clear policymakers and companies are committed to a common goal: to do what is best by the people who rely on our products daily and by our planet. The amazing science applied daily that our industry creates plays an essential role in people’s lives. Making sure they can still enjoy our products, and we can continue to make them, is vital for us all as consumers and really valuable for UK plc. It is also clear that even challenging issues like divergence - while difficult - could actually help to define us. As the UK sets out its stall on science and risk, opportunities abound to propose methods and standards that might inspire others all over the world. A great example of this is the pioneering work on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). Since the late 90s, when our industry moved away from all animal testing in the UK, we have taken great pride in not only developing cutting-edge alternatives, but in sharing our expertise with others. Today, CTPA is facilitating dialogue between company scientists, animal-free testing providers, NGOs, academia and UK regulators. It’s ground-breaking work that could lead the world on animal alternatives; both within our own industry and far beyond. Innovation like this can only happen where there is inherent trust, so we feel privileged that CTPA is seen as a trusted partner. Trusted by policymakers to offer an independent voice and credible solutions as they create the right conditions for consumers and companies. Trusted by our members to move the industry forward: whether that’s further towards Net Positive; further away from controversial claims; or furthering our understanding of our products’ role in self-esteem. I am proud to champion progressive thinking that challenges the science status-quo; proud to be playing a role in shaping our industry’s future; and as Director-General I am also incredibly proud of the expert CTPA team that is blazing this trail.
