IMPORTANT – OPSS Call for Data on the Safety of Cosmetic Ingredients with Suspected Endocrine Disrupting Properties

On 5 April 2022, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS – the UK regulator for cosmetic products) issued a call for data on the safety of five cosmetic ingredients with suspected endocrine disrupting properties.  The ingredients of interest are listed below.

• Benzophenone-3 (CAS 131-57-7)
• Octocrylene (CAS 6197-30-4)
• Homosalate (CAS 118-56-9)
• Kojic acid (CAS 501-30-4)
• Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (CAS 128-37-0)

Any interested parties, including academia, manufacturers of cosmetic products, producers of the substances concerned, and consumer associations, are invited to submit any scientific information relevant to the safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients in the list above.  The data to be submitted shall related to all physicochemical properties, toxicokinetic and toxicological endpoints and assessment of exposure through consumer products.  It is important that each individual ingredient must be provided as a separate submission.

The Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety of Non-Food and Non-Medicinal Consumer Products (SAG-CS) will review the data and assess the safety of these cosmetic ingredients in relation to their endocrine disrupting properties.

The deadline for submission is 31 May 2022.

All interested CTPA members and companies representing the UK cosmetics industry are invited to participate to this call for data.

These ingredients have also been under regulatory scrutiny in the EU as part of the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability.  CTPA is therefore liaising with Cosmetics Europe, the EU personal care association, to explore the possibility to use the data submitted for defence of these ingredients in the EU.
