Following from the success of last year’s event, CTPA has organised a new edition of the virtual training ‘Cosmetic Claims – Principles and Practical Approaches’.  This year’s training will take place every day from 19 to 23 July between 13.30-15.30.

The CTPA team and expert external speakers will share their knowledge on:

  • the regulatory requirements for cosmetic claims in relation to cosmetic specific legislation, consumer protection law and advertising rules;
  • the general principles of claim substantiation;
  • the building blocks of claim substantiation and good study design;
  • how to work with a testing house;
  • practical case studies;
  • CTPA resources on cosmetic claims.

In addition to the topics that were addressed last year, this year’s training will also include:

  • how to build a good claim support dossier, linking the data and test results to the claims made;
  • emerging claims focussing on environmental claims and the changing regulatory landscape, claims on ethical consumer choices.

Elisabeth Erwin is a Senior Investigations Executive at the ASA, having joined as an Investigations Executive in 2016.

Her role is to provide technical advice and quality control supervision to support the work of the team.

As a healthcare products specialist she advises colleagues across the organisation as well as handling cases mainly focussed on medicines, medical devices and cosmetics.

As Regulatory Affairs Manager, I am responsible for UK and EU regulatory matters concerning cosmetic products, ranging from the Cosmetics Regulation, the chemicals regulation REACH, claims, borderlines, aerosols, Brexit and any other relevant sectorial regulation. 

On the important topic of Brexit, I work extensively with members to engage with the UK Government and other relevant trade associations on the future UK regulatory frameworks for cosmetics and feed into key insights for the Brexit negotiations between the UK and the EU. 

Another key focus of my role is to liaise with members and external stakeholders like the Advertising Standards Authority, Clearcast and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, to coordinate borderline and claims matters.  This important work ensures that all relevant actors involved in cosmetic claims and advertising are aligned and the industry can continue to innovate freely and in a competitive way.  Part of this work also involves upskilling our members on the principles of cosmetic claims and their substantiation, also providing support via webinars and training to various functions within a company, including marketing and sales.

Joyce Ryan's biography

Joyce Ryan (CCHEM, MRSC) is a Consultant Research Scientist with over 40 years expertise in Sensory Analysis, Clinical Trials and Statistics.

After 11 years in R&D with Colgate Palmolive in Manchester, Joyce set up Joyce Ryan Consultancy in 1989, a service offering a specialist independent contract testing and advisory service assisting R&D in evaluating new product performance in the cosmetics, toiletries and allied industries. Today, most requests are specifically for claim support studies, primarily using expert hair panels and consumer user trials.

This experience is also utilised by Statistic for Industry, a training company based in North Yorkshire, where Joyce tutors on various courses and recently helped to develop a new course, Statistics for Claim Substantiation.

Joyce sits on the British Standards Committee and ISO Working Group for Sensory Analysis in Foods and is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, the SCI and the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is also author and examiner for the Product Evaluation and Statistics units of the SCS Diploma in Cosmetic Science distance learning course.

Nicholas Shaw Núñez's biography

Nicholas joined CTPA in August 2019 as Head of International Growth & Regulatory Services, bringing his experience and expertise of working within the cosmetics industry for a number of years. Nico studied Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona and has been involved in the cosmetic industry both in Spain and the UK.

Direct involvement with legal frameworks is the cornerstone of my role as Head of International Growth and Regulatory Services, following the pace of change across the UK, EU and other international markets with strategic approach. Together with my    team, we work to ensure CTPA members have access to the legal context that surrounds cosmetic and personal care products, providing guidance on the interpretation of the law worldwide. Proactively, our engagement with our UK Government, international associations and regulators has the aim of carrying the voice of the industry, advocating for compatible frameworks based on equal legislative principles. Additionally, we provide insight and support in matters of trade and continue to work on a better collective industry understanding of Technical Barriers to Trade. 

I am an active member of a number of committees at Cosmetics Europe, including the International Strategic Core Team.

Stewart Long's biography

A biochemist by background, with over 25 years’ experience in the beauty and healthcare industry.  My current role is Chief Executive Officer of Cutest Systems Ltd, a contract research organisation providing claims and safety data for personal care and medical device companies, of over 35 years experience, based in Cardiff. I began my career with Unilever, initially in the dental research group at Colworth House, before moving into the skincare research group where I spent 8 years. I then joined Boots, where over a 12-year career, I held the positions of Claims Innovation Manager, Product Evaluation Manager, Haircare Scientific Adviser and became company Skincare Scientific Adviser across all Boots brands globally. In 2010 I joined Dow Corning in Belgium as Global Market Leader for Skincare, responsible for the skincare ingredients business and in 2014 I moved on to become Global Market Leader for Medical Device materials.  I joined Cutest in November 2015 after nearly 6 years with Dow Corning.

Previously President of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists and currently a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
