UK Government Bill to Bring into Force the UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand FTAs

On 11 May 2022, the UK Government introduced a Trade Bill which will help ratify and bring into force the UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that were signed in December and February respectively.  The following steps will need to be undertaken to bring these Agreements into force:

  • parliament must formally scrutinise the Agreements under the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act;
  • the Trade Bill has to be agreed by Parliament;
  • necessary secondary legislation must be passed by Parliament to make the changes required to our procurement regime to meet the terms of the Agreements;
  • only once the steps above have been completed can these Agreements be ratified and brought into force.

Further information on the implementation of the UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand FTAs can be found on the UK Government website.
