Safety Assessment of Fragrance Compounds and Botanical Ingredients

Fragrances are an extremely important class of cosmetic ingredients which are present in the vast majority of cosmetic products. Similarly, ingredients from botanical sources such as plant extracts are used widely in cosmetic products.  Therefore, evaluating the safety of these complex mixtures is important for robust safety assessment.

The sixth module of the CTPA Safety Assessment Campaign 2021 explains the key considerations and approaches when assessing the safety of fragrance compounds and botanical ingredients. The module covers the following key topics:

  • The chemistry of fragrance compounds and the biological mechanism of allergic reactions.
  • The Quantitative Risk Assessment 2 (QRA 2) approach to the safety assessment of fragrance compounds, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standards and how to use these Standards followed by a practical case study.
  • Challenges and different approaches taken in the safety assessment of botanical ingredients, including the History of Safe Use.

Further details are available in the CTPA Safety Assessment Campaign 2021 programme and in the events section on the CTPA website. The speaker profiles are available at this link.
