Overview of Key Toxicological Principles in Cosmetic Safety Assessment

Consumer safety is the overriding objective of the UK and  EU Cosmetics Regulations.  The safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients and products evaluates any risk they pose and is a critical part of ensuring consumer safety.

The second module of the CTPA Safety Assessment Campaign 2021 explains the key toxicological principles in cosmetic safety assessment. The module covers the following topics:

  • The basic principles of the safety assessment of cosmetics, which include hazard identification, exposure assessment and risk characterisation.
  • The No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) which is a measure of hazard, the Systemic Exposure Dose (SED) which is a measure of exposure, and how to calculate the Margin of Safety (MoS) which is a measure of risk.
  • How to address data gaps by using approaches such as the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC), read-across and Weight of Evidence (WoE).

Further details are available in the CTPA Safety Assessment Campaign 2021 programme and in the events section on the CTPA website. The speaker profiles are available at this link.
